On Friday, February 9, Governor Jim Justice of West Virginia announced 10 projects recommended for funding through the Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization (AMLER) Program, totaling almost $30 million in federal grants. Notably, the Ohio County Wheeling Gateway Center Project was granted $2,011,172 for its proposed project.
The projects included in AMLER aim to promote economic development at abandoned mine land sites across West Virginia. The announcement took place at the Grave Creek Mound Historical Complex in Moundsville, WV. Grant applications were reviewed by a committee representing various state departments and offices, with final approval pending from the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE). Projects must be located on or near mine sites inactive before August 3, 1977, as per program criteria.
