On Friday, February 13, 2026, Congressman Riley Moore visited the Wheeling Gateway project site to celebrate a major milestone for downtown Wheeling and the Ohio Valley region: a $2 million federal allocation dedicated to creating a direct connection between the future Visitor and Heritage Center and the existing Wheeling Heritage Riverfront Trail.

During his visit, Congressman Moore formally presented the funding, which was secured through the Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2026. In total, 11 of 12 funding requests championed by Senator Shelley Moore Capito, Senator Jim Justice, and Congressman Riley Moore were approved, representing a significant investment in projects that strengthen economic development efforts across West Virginia.

The trail connector has consistently emerged as one of the community’s highest priorities throughout the Gateway Center design process. This connection will strengthen access between downtown Wheeling and the riverfront, enhancing mobility for residents while improving the experience for visitors exploring the city’s history and cultural assets.

Project partners extend their sincere thanks to Congressman Moore for visiting the site and for his leadership in advancing this investment, as well as to Senator Capito and Senator Justice for their continued advocacy on behalf of Wheeling and the Ohio Valley. This allocation will allow the project to deliver on one of the community’s most aspirational goals, reinforcing the value of strong federal, state and local partnerships.

As the Wheeling Gateway Center moves forward, investments like the trail connector ensure the project remains rooted in what matters most to the community—connectivity, access, and vibrant experiences that serve both residents and visitors for generations to come.
