Governor Jim Justice visited Wheeling to present a $4.4 million Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization grant for the Wheeling Gateway Center project to transform the former Wheeling Inn site into a 20,000-square-foot state welcome center. This new center, the first of its kind located off a major highway, will feature a heritage museum, event space, retail shops, a marquee restaurant, and outdoor plazas near the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, enhancing the visibility of the historic landmark. Justice credited Wheeling officials for pitching the idea, which is expected to draw visitors downtown and highlight Wheeling’s potential in tourism and other sectors. West Virginia Secretary of Tourism Chelsea Ruby emphasized that the center will replace an old, closed welcome site on I-70, offering travelers a richer experience in West Virginia.
